The Importance of Mommy-and-Me Photoshoots – Cleveland Family Photographer

Hi, I’m Anastasia, a family photographer in the Cleveland and Northeast Ohio area. And while I have tons and tons of portraits of my kid, my husband, and the families I served, I have very few pictured of myself with my son.

So in this blogpost, I wanted to share some of my thoughts on this photography topic.

Whenever I see my husband Josh and my son Everett being cute together, I instinctively pull out my phone to take a picture or a video. I have gigabytes of these cute little memories since Everett was born and to this day. Josh, on the other hand, doesn’t have this instinct, therefore, I have very few pictures.

I notice it is a pretty common theme with husbands. When you look at the pictures of your kids’ childhoods it may seem like they had an absent mother, when in reality the mom is always the one photographing.

Here are some solutions that may help you if you have the same problem.

  • Talk to your partner. Use your best reasoning to explain why it is important to you. It might work (at least short term).
There are so many good reasons. I know that my husband is the best dad to our son, he is attentive, caring and loving. And he is the most wonderful partner, it is just that the family pictures and documenting everyday moments are things that are very low on his radar. So I have to explain to him how it is important to me, and will be important to our son as he grows older and wants to learn more about his childhood.
  • Take advantage of selfies and self-portraits on a timer. At the end of the day, it’s better to have some blurred selfies than no pictures at all. The timer function on phones and cameras is a great tool to use too. It takes a bit of effort to get used to, but in return you get somewhat candid portraits with your kid.
  • Book photoshoots. They can be for the whole family or just you and the kid(s). I love paying special attention to mom+kids shots at my family sessions.

I manage with the combination of the three. Would you like a little help from a family photographer? You can book a family or mommy-and-me photoshoot with me here!
